Virgin Media & Sky are Friends again ;-)

Whoo… I still remember the day when I turned on my faithful Virgin Box and received the “Thanks to Sky, the Sky One channel is no longer available. They’ve picked up their ball and gone home. Foul play? We think so.” It was such a shame to loose all these valuable channels just cus these little kids couldn’t get along anymore….

Well, after a valiant attempt by Virgin to actually sue Sky for competition rules in the UK high Court, it seems they have decided to be friends again… A new deal which comes into affect on November 13th will see the return of Sky One, Sky News and some other channels not yet declared. This deal has also been secured untill 2011 (so the Olympics are gonna clog it up for a good 6 months then)…

Gotta say its very nice of sky to come back to the table, especially now, since many of the current US TV shows which are exclusive to sky are now airing regular again, begs the question what exactly did Virgin do to pull these channels back into their sweet embrace !

Now the argument over the future of ITV is to be settled, but that’s left to the power players (Murdoch’s) to sort out… Does anyone else feel like kinda an ant playing in the giants playground…?

Media Center gets Birtish Digital TV Compliance – At Last !!

Microsoft’s Media Center is now officially compliant with Britain’s digital over-the-air TV system Freeview. While users had already been able to pick up the channels, they’ll now get the full service, including interactive content.

Digital terrestrial TV dates back 10 years in Britain, and 10.5 million homes now have at least one set receiving Freeview broadcasts. When the analogue signal is switched off over the next four years, Freeview will almost certainly become the main source of television for the majority of the population.

This week’s official certification has two benefits for Microsoft. First, it can use the widely-known Freeview brand name, for example in marketing ‘Freeview PCs’. That brand is well established thanks to a long-running campaign by all the major broadcasters. It may well be useful in attracting casual users who’d otherwise be wary that receiving TV broadcasts on a PC might be too complicated.

Secondly, Media Center can now offer full interactive content. This could be a big selling point as the major broadcasters often use the interactive feature for additional content, for example broadcasting a wider range of live events during the Olympics.

The endorsement should also make it more likely Microsoft will be able to make sure Media Center is technically compatible with the high-definition version of Freeview which is expected to launch late next year.

Microsoft was able to earn the official compliance by partnering with Hauppauge, a TV tuner manufacturer which produces standalone Freeview digital recorders. The partnership comes as part of Microsoft’s worldwide push of ‘Protected Broadcast Driver Architecture’, a technical solution to make sure Media Center works with the TV tuners and broadcast system of each particular country.

The announcement comes two weeks after Sony launched a UK device which sits between a TV aerial and a Playstation 3, allowing the console to receive and record Freeview programming.

Season 4 of Battlestar Galactica finally here !

Okay, its finally arrived, the FINAL season of Battlestar Galactica… after months of rumours about it cancellation, and a movie substitution the first episode of season 4 was aired last night. At current i have no idea whats going to happen in this penultimate season, but if the first three are anything to go by, then its got some serious standards to live upto, and i doubt its gonna disappoint !

News has also filtered down the grapevine about the spin-off season to BSG, Caprica. In case you haven’t heard, Sci Fi has ordered a pilot called Caprica from BSG creator Ronald D. Moore. It goes back in time to before the creation of the Cylons for a look at life in the Colonies before, well, everything blew up.

Caprica is the story of two families, the Graystones and the Adams (better known to us now as the Adamas), and we’ll be meeting the man who fathered and grandfathered the goodness that is Bill and Lee Adama (Edward James Olmos and Jamie Bamber). Interestingly, when Ronald D. Moore was interviewed last year, Caprica’s plotlines were not directly tied to the characters we know from the current series. RDM was also asked if there might be any Thrace-Adama-Agathon-Roslin ancestors in Caprica, to which the reply, “Right now, there are no ancestors of anybody in the pilot.” Well, looks like that changed in the intervening time, and thank goodness!
