iOS 5.0.1 Poor Battery Performance

I recently, like many purchased an iPhone 4S (kinda sad that there wasnt a 5, but i can deal with that). But iv been a little dissapointed with the battery performance my new new £499.00 phone. Given i had the iPhone 4 before, and was comfortably getting over a days ‘angry’ usage out of the device before going hunting for my docking station, the 4S seems to run out of steam pretty dam quick.

Well, this solution doesnt quite resolve the issue 100%, but does help a little. Go check out your settings, Location Services, System Services and see what your phone is saying about things like “Setting Time Zone”,  Location based iAds and Traffic.

If like mine, you have a little purple compass next to them, this kinda indicates that these services are searching constantly looking for GPS positions to help them out. Well, personally i dont care about iAds, nor helping Googles traffic service, and on the rare occasion i do leave the country, im sure i can figure out how to change the time…

So, do yourself a favour and knock these off. I did it and am now getting a few more hours out of my faithful friend.

Also, do yourself another favour, and stop asking SIRI to remind you of things when you get to places, you will notice that when you do this, the compass symbol doesn’t disappear until you reach your desired alert location. The reminders app is constantly polling your position to make sure it hasn’t missed an opportunity to remind you to “charge your phone when you get home”. If you do insist on using the reminders, try doing what im doing, make a good conservative guess when you think your going to be there, and set a time based reminder. e.g. I know I finish work at 5:30PM, it takes me roughly 25 mins to get home, so try this “Siri, remind me at 6PM to clean the house before my wife comes home and beats me up for not cleaning the house”, it works just as well and iv only been beat up once !

Telnet on Vista

By default, Vista doesn’t install the Telnet client. The client is for text-based communication with remote systems. You can install it by following these steps:

1. Click Start then select Control Panel.

2. Select Programs and Features.

3. Select Turn Windows features on or off.

4. Select the Telnet Client option.

5. Click OK.

6. A dialog box will appear to confirm installation. The telnet command should now be available.

Megavideo, Remove Time Limitation

I suspect that most of you use or have used Megavideo, an excellent video [sharing] service, however as most of [you] would know it does have an annoying time-limit on its videos to force payment out of you.

So the first thing you could use is this site http://megastreaming.org/ all you need to do is type in the URL of your video in the provided space and it will generate a link without the time limit.

Illitmux is a handy Firefox plug-in that does the same thing as the previous website, basically what they have is a load of gold accounts and when [you] press the button they just stream you the video via the gold account. Here is the link Illitmux

Multiple Google Calendars on iPhone / iPod Touch

Right-O…

For setting up the general sync with your google account its pretty easy,

  1. goto settings
  2. Mail, Contacts, Calendars
  3. Add Account
  4. Choose “Microsoft Exchange”
  5. Server ‘m.google.com’ email, username and password are your Google account ones (if you dont have a google email, just put any address in here and it will show the “server field after a few seconds).
  6. Congrats, thats about it really… once this is done you should be able to got into your settings and enable/disable the sync’ing with google calendar, contacts and email

As for the Multiple calendars, this is one iv been trying to hunt down a solution for ages, but came across a helpful article this evening which had all the answers lol…

First stage is to obviously set up all the calendars, how you want them on the real google website. So in my case I had my own personal calendar which sync’s with outlook on my PC and then my Girlfriends calendar which is synced between her ipod and google calendar as a shared item. Once this is done, follow the instructions below.

  1. Open safari on your iPhone, iPod and browse to m.google.com/sync
  2. Choose the mobile device you wish to sync the additional calendars with
  3. Place ticks in the Shared Calendars (upto 25)

Job Done ! Enjoy !
