iOS 5.0.1 Poor Battery Performance

I recently, like many purchased an iPhone 4S (kinda sad that there wasnt a 5, but i can deal with that). But iv been a little dissapointed with the battery performance my new new £499.00 phone. Given i had the iPhone 4 before, and was comfortably getting over a days ‘angry’ usage out of the device before going hunting for my docking station, the 4S seems to run out of steam pretty dam quick.

Well, this solution doesnt quite resolve the issue 100%, but does help a little. Go check out your settings, Location Services, System Services and see what your phone is saying about things like “Setting Time Zone”,  Location based iAds and Traffic.

If like mine, you have a little purple compass next to them, this kinda indicates that these services are searching constantly looking for GPS positions to help them out. Well, personally i dont care about iAds, nor helping Googles traffic service, and on the rare occasion i do leave the country, im sure i can figure out how to change the time…

So, do yourself a favour and knock these off. I did it and am now getting a few more hours out of my faithful friend.

Also, do yourself another favour, and stop asking SIRI to remind you of things when you get to places, you will notice that when you do this, the compass symbol doesn’t disappear until you reach your desired alert location. The reminders app is constantly polling your position to make sure it hasn’t missed an opportunity to remind you to “charge your phone when you get home”. If you do insist on using the reminders, try doing what im doing, make a good conservative guess when you think your going to be there, and set a time based reminder. e.g. I know I finish work at 5:30PM, it takes me roughly 25 mins to get home, so try this “Siri, remind me at 6PM to clean the house before my wife comes home and beats me up for not cleaning the house”, it works just as well and iv only been beat up once !

iPhone on Orange UK

Just come across a wonderful rumour which made my ears prick up slightly, Orange may have a shot at the iPhone hehe (yea yea, i know.. iv heard this rumour before too, but there is nothing wrong with having hope, and cash standing by lol)

Back in July 2008, there were rumours about a potential deal between Orange and Apple, stating that Orange was trying to persuade Apple it would be able to do a much better job at selling the iPhones than O2 could (not sure about that arguement, but it might be nice to have a choice).

Orange currently is the market leader of iPhone sales in over 27 other countries around the world, including France, it still escapes me, even to this day why O2 managed to sneak their fat noses into this exclusive (extortionate) contract…

Orange is at current on the verge of seeing its arch-rival Bouygues Telecom start selling the iPhone in France (yay, competition) and a UK deal over the iPhone with Apple could potentially alleviate the loss revenues in France and inject a little more interest around the iPhone, with people who would rather not sign up with the overlords of crappy signal (least around my area hehe), O2.

It could also be worth noting that some form of agreement, at least in theory could already of been reached between Orange and Apple, due to O2′s recent decision to start selling off the Palm Pre smartphone, one of the iPhones most credible revals, but this is a flakey analysis at the best of times, due to O2 and most networks ability to just choose their availiable handsets based on which one the untrained monkey in the Consumer Relations team goes to when called…

Well, ill wait and see… its not like its gonna help me anytime soon anyway, due to HTC dissapointing me once again with their HTC Touch Diamond, which had the battery life of a stone and the usability (based on its crawling speed and constant crashing) of a said stone being thrown at your head. Im currently stuck with an 18 month contact, which im hardly into, and still using my old Sony Ericsson K800i, which aint missed a beat in 3 years ! Highly reccomended for people who just wanna call, text and not run up massive Data bills ;)

But for those of you that cant wait that long, check out Play.com, and their ability to somehow be selling Apple approved 3G unlocked iPhones… more news on how this is possible later, though im sure the insane price has something to do with it !

iPhone 3G Remote Wipe & Exchange 2003

Well, iv had by iPhone 3G about 3 days so far, and everything is going okay with it, but ill do more details what i think of it later, once iv thoroughly put it through its paces (and when apple stops releasing new firmware every 10 min’s lol)…

For this entry, its gonna be a brief guide to getting the famed remote wipe functionality working on a Small Business Server 2003 (Obviously running Exchange 2003 SP1).

Stage 1

If like me your companyweb internal site wasnt working, you need to take a look into that first. My problem with this came down to the fact that everytime i visited;

https://companyweb/

i got an error : Page cannot be displayed. If your getting anything along these lines, then i suggest checking the following;

  • Make sure your DNS has a correct entry for companyweb, and its pointed to the right server
  • check your running the latest service packs for Server 2003 and Exchange 2003
  • Check your Web Service Extensions, make sure the standard options are Allowed, and not Prohibited !

Okay, once you got access to that, its pretty simple from that point on;

  1. Download the Microsoft Exchange Server ActiveSync Web Administration Tool (very longwinded title for such a small application)
  2. Install this on your Server
    1. By default, only remote systems can access this tool, to add the domain controller itself add the server name to the Local intranet list for Internet Explorer (In Internet Explorer, click Tools, click Internet Options, click Security, click Local intranet, and then click Sites), use ‘localhost’ as the server name when specifying the mobileAdmin URL in the browser
  3. Access the tool via either https://localhost/MobileAdmin or https://[servername]/MobileAdmin.
  4. Login using an administrator level accounts credentials
  5. Behold the beauty of the tool, two links and nothing but white space, Microsoft really went out of their way to make this one look fantastic !

Well thats about it, but there are a couple of last min hints;

Most people iv heard about with this tool, have found the options [Wipe] and [Delete] as shown here alas, if like me when you first opened the tool it read [Block] and [Delete] then please take it on faith from me, that Block in fact should read Wipe.

Some genius in the Microsoft Programming team obviously took a day off, and do NOT listen to this guy, an apparent MSFT, who advises people that clicking BLOCK simply disallows access, sorry Robbin, but you are a tool and need to research things a little better before giving out advice on things you obviously have no clue about. Once you click Block or Wipe, the phone will continue to operate normally until it next attempts to sync data to your exchange server, at that point the phone will switch to a black screen with an Apple Logo in the centre, this state will remain until the phone has been wiped (roughly 8 hours).

Well, thats about it… as i said, its brief and to the point, hope it help someone, check back later for my views on the iPhone 3G (once iv re-flashed it with firmware lol)…

WordPress on iPhone

Looks like the first reviews are in, and when i finally get my 3G iPhone ill be Blogging on the move. A brief review of the new WordPress iPhone App found at ‘From A to B…. to IT’

——-

Well well. This is my first post using the new wordpress app avaliable for the iPhone!

So far, so good although I do feel they could male better use of the screen real estate. For a first attempt it’s a pretty cool app and the offline sync works great.

One thing that has slightly annoyed me about some of the apps from the app store is there lack of offline capability. I commute on a train and don’t always have a signal, this is where these apps will shine by allowing me to continue working uninterrrupted.

One app (or suite of apps) I’d love to see is backpack (or packrat). I’m a heavy user of backpack and whilst it works great in safari it would be great to have it as an offline GTD app. Please someone create it!

So far iPhone 2.0 and the app store is amazing. Notch up another win for apple.

91% of Japanese dont want an iPhone, more for the rest of us !

A survey of 402 Japanese internet users aged 20 to 49 conducted by a company called iSHARE suggests that less than a tenth of the market is interested in buying an iPhone. iPhone 3G is set to debut in Japan and about six dozen other countries starting July 11.

The survey was conducted shortly after SoftBank Mobile announced it would offer the iPhone in Japan, but two days before the Worldwide Developer Conference announcement of the iPhone 3G. How that skews the results, I’m not sure.

Of the people surveyed, 36 said they were planning to purchase an iPhone. iSHARE determined, based on other questions it asked, that the iPhone’s non-replaceable battery could be weakening purchasing intent.
