Microsoft Free Antivirus

A BETA version of the upcoming Microsoft antivirus software (codenamed Morro) will be soon available through the Microsoft website.

MS employees have been testing the software over teh last few months n an effort to determine if this package is a suitable replacement for the Windows Live OneCare package which was due for replacement last November (which was charged at an annual cost of £59).

Microsoft are promoting this effort as a serious attempt to encourage more home users to consider the threats of internet security and protection against the threats which are becoming more predominant on the web.

"Our goal with OneCare was to get more customers more protected, and I don’t think we were able to do that to the extent that we would have liked," said Amy Barzdukas, a senior director of product management with Microsoft. "As we look around the world now, the countries where PC growth is most rapid, in emerging markets such as Brazil and India and China, the malware threat is even greater."

Obviously this new package, which incorporate the OneCare antimalware engine will not be packaged into the operating system (cant say thats a surprise, sure a few AV businesses would of had they lawyers on speed dial if that had been the case). Although Microsoft have not released a solid release date for this package, they have indicated that this will be very soon…

Additionally, it has been stated that this is a consumer product only, supporting Windows 7, Vista SP2 and XP SP3), and will not be available for server based machines (sorry chaps, no cheap software for you hehe)

Filter your own IP from Google Analytics

If you have a team of people on your marketing team constantly checking the website you’re tracking with Google Analytics, filtering out specific IP addresses is one of the ways you can make sure you’re not tracking irrelevant visits to your site. Excluding these IPs may help you get more accurate numbers for metrics like average time on site (since your marketing team probably spends the most time on your site every day), your visitors’ geographic locations, etc.

To start filtering out IPs, follow the steps below:

  1. Collect IPs from anyone in your office (including yourself) that you don’t want to track. If they don’t know what their IP addresses are, an easy way to figure it out is to go to http://whatismyipaddress.com/.
  2. Then, sign in to your Analytics account at http://www.google.com/analytics.
  3. If you have more than one account, select the account that has the profile you want to apply the IP exclusion filter to.
  4. Once you’re on the Profile Overview page, click ‘Edit’ from underneath the Actions column.
  5. From under the ‘Filters Applied to Profile’ section, select ‘Add Filter.’
  6. Select ‘Add new Filter for Profile.’
    filterssection

  7. Enter an easily identifiable Filter name (i.e. ‘My IP address,’ or ‘CMO’s IP address).
  8. Select the filter type labeled ‘Exclude all traffic from an IP address.’ The IP address field will auto-populate with an example IP address. Enter the correct value. Remember to use regular expressions when entering any IP address. For example, if the IP address to filter is:

    176.168.1.1
then the IP address value will be:
    176\.168\.1\.1

  9. You may also enter a range of IP addresses. For example:
    Range: 176.168.1.1-25 and 10.0.0.1-14
    IP address value : ^176\.168\.1\.([1-9]|1[0-9]|2[0-5])$|^10\.0\.0\.([1-9]|1[0-4])$
  10. Click ‘Save changes’ to finish.

Google results – Date Filtered

google_date_croppedGoogle can reorder search and news results from the last day, week, a few months, or entire year by adding a small string to the end of the search URL. Just add this string—&as_qdr=d—to the address bar and hit enter. You’ll get a custom drop-down box that lets you re-order results based on date. It’s great for getting past the same top results you’ve already looked through, as well as grabbing only the newest links related to gadgets, software, or whatever else you’re searching. Sadly it doesn’t work on Google Images, but let us know in the comments if it does work on other Google searches.
